Thai dialogue: ordering food in a Bangkok restaurant

One short, real conversation — the one almost every visitor has on night one. First you hear it, then you take the diner's side: ask for the menu, order fried rice, set the spice level before the kitchen starts cooking, get a glass of water, and ask for the bill like a local. Every line is spoken aloud, and the full transcript is written out below so you can read along or study offline. New to the words? Warm up with the food & restaurant phrases first.

🎯 Your mission

Setting
A small restaurant in Bangkok at dinner time. You're hungry, the menu is in Thai, and the kitchen cooks spicy by default.
You
The diner — you speak only the Thai you've got.
The waiter
Friendly, fast, and about to ask the question that decides your whole meal: spicy?
Your goal
Order fried rice that is NOT spicy, get a glass of water, and pay the bill — all in Thai, without a single pushy word.
Ready

14 short lines. Wrong answers never end the meal — the waiter reacts, you get a coaching note, and you try the line again.

What a Thai speaker would say: almost this whole meal runs on one pattern — khǒo (ขอ) plus a noun: menu, water, one more. Politeness rides on that one word and on never adding the pushy particle sì (สิ) to an order. And the spice line has a deadline: mâi phèt (ไม่เผ็ด) only works if you say it before the wok starts, not after the plate arrives.

Restaurant Thai — quick answers

How do you ask for the menu in Thai?

Say khǒo mee-nuu (ขอเมนู) — the menu, please. khǒo plus a noun is the polite request pattern in Thai: khǒo mee-nuu for the menu, khǒo náam for water, khǒo èek nùeng for one more.

How do you order food not spicy in Thailand?

Say mâi phèt (ไม่เผ็ด) — not spicy — when the waiter asks phèt mǎi (spicy?). Thai kitchens default to spicy, so say it before the food is cooked, not after it arrives. For a gentler heat instead of none at all, phèt nít-nòi (เผ็ดนิดหน่อย) means a little spicy.

How do you ask for the bill in a Thai restaurant?

Say chék bin (เช็คบิล) — the bill, please. It is a loanword used in restaurants all over Thailand, so it needs no translation. The bare word bin on its own sounds blunt; use the full phrase.
